Police Involved Motor Vehicle Collision – C162635

On July 13, 2019, at approximately 7:20 p.m., a Winnipeg Police Service General Patrol unit was in the area of Salter Street and Aberdeen Ave. investigating a suspicious male in the area. A second General Patrol unit arriving to assist was travelling westbound on Aberdeen. This marked cruiser car crossed Salter St westbound on Aberdeen at which time it collided with a van travelling southbound on Salter. Four occupants of the van as well as the two officers in the cruiser were taken to hospital where they were treated and released.

As a result the intersection was shut down until approximately 3:15 a.m. on July 14 while detailed forensic analysis was conducted.

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba has been advised of the incident.

Homicide – Investigation: C19-162551

On July 13, 2019, at approximately 5:25 p.m., Winnipeg Police General Patrol Units responded to a report of a male assaulted in the hallway of an apartment block the 600 block of Flora Ave. The victim, a male in his twenties, was transported to hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

The victim has been identified as Christopher Helstrom, 27, of Teulon, Manitoba.

In the early morning hours of July 15 homicide detectives arrested a suspect in relation to this murder. He remains in custody, however, charges he has not been charged at this time.

This investigation is continuing by members of the Homicide Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Drugs – Arrests: R19-45586

On July 11, 2019, Central District General Patrol and Community Support officers began an investigation into a drug trafficking operation related to a residence in an apartment located in the 400 block of Furby St.

Two suspects were arrested coming out of the building. A search warrant was executed on July 11, 2019. As a result 1.33 kilograms of methamphetamine was seized along with $5,700 in Canadian currency, a money counter and 20 blotters believed to contain fentanyl. The methamphetamine would have an estimated street value of $20,000, however, when separated for street sale would have an estimated value of approximately $130,000.

A male and female, both in their 40’s, were both charged with various drug and trafficking-related offences. As directed by the Criminal Code of Canada both suspects were released on a Promise to Appear.

Shooting: C19-162888

On July 14, 2019, at approximately 1:20 a.m. Winnipeg Police responded a report of a male who was shot in the 700 block of Maryland St.

A male victim in his 20’s was transported to hospital in critical condition with gunshot wounds. His condition has since been upgraded to stable. Not arrests have been made.

This investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
