Homicide Investigation - Arrest: C19-162551
Winnipeg Police Homicide detectives have made an arrest in the murder of Christopher Helstrom, 27.
Philip William Bennett, 46, has been charged with:
- Second Degree Murder
He was detained in custody.
As previously released:
On July 13, 2019, at approximately 5:25 p.m., Winnipeg Police General Patrol Units responded to a report of a male assaulted in the hallway of an apartment block the 600 block of Flora Ave. The victim, a male in his twenties, was transported to hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
The victim has been identified as Christopher Helstrom, 27, of Teulon, Manitoba.
In the early morning hours of July 15 homicide detectives arrested a suspect in relation to this murder. He remains in custody, however, charges he has not been charged at this time.
This investigation is continuing by members of the Homicide Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
Stabbing – Investigation: C19-164694
On July 16, 2019, at approximately 2:10 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a report of an injured male in the area of Young Street and Cumberland Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from upper-body injuries, consistent with being struck by a bladed weapon. He was transported to hospital in unstable condition and has since been upgraded to stable.
Officers searched the area with negative results. It is believed that several people were involved in the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators.
This investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
Stolen Vehicle – Arrest: C19-164782
On July 16, 2019, at approximately 7:15 a.m. Winnipeg Police were alerted to a stolen vehicle that was travelling seen in the area of Roblin Blvd and the West Perimeter Hwy. The vehicle was a fully marked police vehicle belonging to Manitoba First Nations Policing.
The vehicle travelled extensively throughout the city. At approximately 8:00 a.m. a tire-deflation device (Stop Stick) was deployed in the area of Dawson Road and Lagimodiere Blvd. The vehicle was stopped and one adult male was arrested and is currently in police custody.
Stolen Vehicle – Arrest: C19-164483
On July 15, 2019, at approximately 8:55 p.m., Winnipeg Police General Patrol officers observed a stolen vehicle being driven in the area of Munroe Ave. and Watt St. The vehicle came to a dead-end lot and a marked WPS police car pulled in behind it. The suspect vehicle then drove directly at officers and they discharged their firearm in response. The suspect rammed the police car and fled.
The suspect vehicle was able to flee a short distance before crashing into a building in the area of Watt St. and Larsen Ave. One suspect was located in the vehicle. A conducted energy weapon (Taser) had to be deployed by officers in order to safely place the suspect under arrest. A second suspect that had not been seen was able to get back to the police cruiser car which he stole and fled the area in.
The stolen cruiser was driven through the Elmwood neighbourhood until it was abandoned in the area of Harbison Ave and Glenwood Cres. This second male suspect fled on foot and remains at large.
