Residential Break & Enter – Arrest: C19-168185
On July 20, 2019, at approximately 2:35 a.m., North District General Patrol officers, along with AIR1 and the K9 Unit, responded to a break & enter in the 100 block of Hillbrook Drive. Three youth suspects had been observed breaking into an attached garage and were now checking vehicles on the street.
AIR1 arrived first and began tracking the youth suspects as they entered a nearby vehicle that had been previously reported stolen on July 18, 2019, from the Tyndall Park area.
The stolen vehicle eventually became stuck in a ditch near Jefferson Avenue and Melgund Road at which time the five occupants exited the vehicle and ran southbound through a nearby field. AIR1 directed ground units to the suspects as they fled and observed one suspect discard a knife.
All five were taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit by General Patrol and K9 Unit members. The discarded knife, along with a key fob for the stolen vehicle, was recovered.
A stolen bank card, taken from a vehicle in the Hilbrook Drive area, was found on one suspect.
A 14-year-old male, a 15-year-old male, and two 16-year-old male, all of Winnipeg, have been arrested for:
- Break Enter & Commit – Place
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000
- Theft Under $5000 (x3)
They were released on a Promise to Appear in accordance with the Criminal Code and Youth Criminal Justice Act.
A 16-year-old male of Winnipeg has been arrested for:
- Break Enter & Commit – Place
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000
- Theft Under $5000
- Mischief Under $5,000/Obstruct in Enjoyment (x2)
- Possession of a Weapon
- Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition
He was detained in custody.
Weapons – Arrest: C19-168974
On July 20, 2019, at approximately 11:05 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a report of a male waving around a firearm in the area of Austin Street North and Lorne Avenue.
Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the male. While investigating the incident, an unrelated male was observed on a bicycle attempting to elude officers in the area of Main Street and Dufferin Avenue.
A North District General Patrol unit took the male into custody in the 200 block of Dufferin Avenue. He was found to be in possession of a hunting-style knife, a sawed-off 12 gauge pump-action shotgun and fourteen 12 gauge shotgun shells.
Darrell Jason Tymchuk, a 47-year-old male, has been charged with:
- Transport Firearm or Restricted Weapon Contrary to Regulations
- Possession of a Weapon (x2)
- Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition (x2)
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
- Tampering with Serial Number of a Firearm
- Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
He was detained in custody.
Stolen Vehicle/Assault Police Officer – Arrest: C19-168963
On July 20, 2019, at approximately 11:20 p.m., an East District General Patrol unit observed a stolen vehicle travelling slowly without lights on in the area of McKenzie Street and Machray Avenue.
Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over; however, it fled at a high rate of speed. After a brief pursuit, officers lost sight of the vehicle in the area of Cathedral Avenue and Arlies Street.
AIR1 quickly acquired the vehicle and observed it come to a stop in the 800 block of Bannerman Avenue where a lone male occupant fled on foot. The male was tracked as he attempted to hide from officers and eventually hid under a carport in the same block.
Ground units were directed to the male who resisted arrest and assaulted two officers. Conducted electrical weapons (“Tasers”) were deployed but were ineffective. The male was eventually safely taken into custody.
The vehicle had been reported stolen on July 18, 2019, from the Sargent Park area.
Michael McKenzie Graham Carriere, a 31-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:
- Assault a Peace Officer (x2)
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000
- Resist Peace Officer
- Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer
- Operation of a Conveyance While Prohibited
He was detained in custody.
Shooting – Investigation: C19-168982
On July 20, 2019, at approximately 11:45 p.m., an East District General Patrol unit was in the area of Levis Street and Riverton Avenue when they heard the sound of shots.
Soon after, officers located an injured adult male in a vehicle near Gordon Avenue and Brazier Street. The male was transported to hospital in stable condition.
