Theft – Stolen Vehicle - Arrest: C20-28762
On February 10, 2020, at approximately 12:19 a.m., a member of the Canine Unit located a vehicle in the area of Selkirk Avenue and Sinclair Street that had been reported as stolen and attempted to pull over a vehicle. The vehicle refused to stop and fled from the officer at high speed.
Air1 located the vehicle and followed it to the area of the Winnipeg International Airport where the accused was taken into custody by members of general patrol without incident. Further investigation revealed the accused was the subject of a Canada Wide Warrant for Apprehension and suspension of Parole/Statutory release.
The accused, Jonas Donat SABISTON, a 25-year-old male of Winnipeg,was arrested and charged with the following offences:
- Unlawfully at Large
- Possession of Property Obtained by crime over $5000
- Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000
- Operation of a conveyance while prohibited
SABISTON was remanded into custody.
Theft – Stolen Vehicle - Arrest: C20-31176
On February 10, 2020, at approximately 12:24 a.m., members of East District general patrol were in the area of Donald Street and Stradbrook Avenue and located a vehicle that had been reported stolen. Members attempted to contain the vehicle but were unsuccessful and the vehicle fled the area at high speed. Air 1 was requested and took over from the involved ground units.
The suspect vehicle obtained speeds of over 100 km/h during the prolonged pursuit through various areas of the city while being visually observed by Air1. Ground units were able to deploy tire deflation devices that were effective in disabling numerous tires on the vehicle.
The vehicle was contained in the area of Wildwood Park at which time the suspect attempted to flee, ramming numerous patrol units. An attending officer was pinned to his cruiser car by the fleeing suspect, requiring medical attention in a hospital. The involved officer was medically cleared and fortunately only suffered minor injuries.
The accused, January Snow CORNISH, a 38-year old female of Winnipeg, Manitoba has been arrested and charged with the following:
- Assault Peace Officer causing bodily harm
- Assault Peace Officer with a weapon (x2)
- Possess of scheduled substance – Methamphetamine
- Flight while pursued by a Peace Officer
- Dangerous operation of a conveyance
- Possess property obtained by crime over $5000
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000
- Drive suspended/disqualified (HTA)
CORNISH was remanded into custody.
After driving over the stop stick, the vehicle continued to the area of Erin Street and Sargent Avenue where the vehicle was abandoned. A K9 unit searched the area and located one male hiding under a trailer in the area. The suspect refused to cooperate with the officer's commands and a service dog was deployed. The was male was taken into custody.
