Stabbings

On June 12, 2020, at 3:35 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a residential building in the 300 block of Hargrave Street for a report of a stabbing (incident C20-135306).

Upon arrival, officers located an injured 60-year-old male. He was transported to hospital in stable condition. It is believed that the incident occurred when a male sought out retaliation for a broken window and came upon an unsuspecting group of people. He subsequently threatened the group and stabbed one individual.

Nicholas Leal Matos, a 19-year-old male, has been charged with:

- Assault with a Weapon (x2)
- Uttering Threats - Cause Death or Bodily Harm (x4)
- Mischief Under $5,000/Obstruct in Enjoyment

On June 13, 2020, at 12:24 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a residence in the Richmond West neighbourhood for a report of a stabbing (incident C20-135737).

Upon arrival, officers located a severely injured 17-year-old male. He was transported to hospital in unstable condition. It is believed the incident occurred after the 17-year-old attempted to rob a 14-year-old male acquaintance, who retaliated with a knife and stabbed him several times.

The 14-year-old male faces charges of:

- Aggravated Assault
- Assault with a Weapon

 The 17-year-old male faces charges of:

- Robbery (x2)

On June 14, 2020, at 1:51 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a bar in the 1600 block of Main Street for a report of a stabbing (incident C20-136793).

Upon arrival, officers located an injured 32-year-old male. He was transported to hospital in stable condition. It is believed he was stabbed while walking to the bar. The investigation is ongoing.

At 2:02 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a bar in the 1100 block or Arlington Street for a report of a male that had been shot (incident C20-136799).

Soon after, an injured 44-year-old male attended a nearby hospital. It is believed that he had been stabbed during a dispute at the bar. A firearm was discharged during the incident, but the shot is not believed to have hit anyone. The investigation is ongoing.

At 1:29 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a hotel in the 700 block of Main St for a report of a stabbing (incident C20-137107).

Upon arrival, officers located an injured 53-year-old male. He was transported to hospital in stable condition. It is believed that the male was stabbed during a robbery of money.

A 48-year-old female of Winnipeg faces charges of:

- Robbery

At 2:55 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a suite of a different hotel in the 700 block of Main Street for a report of a stabbing (incident C20-136238).

Upon arrival, officers located an injured 46-year-old male. He was transported to hospital in unstable condition. It is believed the incident occurred over an allegation of stolen illicit drugs.

A 39-year-old male faces charges of:

- Aggravated Assault
- Possession of a Weapon

A 27-year-old female faces charges of:

- Aggravated Assault
- Possession of a Weapon

At 9:17 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a residence in the first 100 block of St. George Road for a report of a stabbing (incident C20-136555).

Soon after, a 34-year-old male attended a nearby hospital with serious injuries. It is believed that the male was stabbed when he and a group of individuals attempted a home invasion over illicit drugs.

The 34-year-old male faces charges of:

- Assault with a Weapon
- Possession of a Weapon
- Break Enter & Commit Robbery - Dwelling House

A 33-year-old male faces charges of:

- Break Enter & Commit Robbery - Dwelling House
- Theft Under $5000 (x3)

The resident, a 43-year-old male, faces charges of:

- Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine
- Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine
- Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000
- Possession for the Purpose of Selling Cannabis (Cannabis Act)

On June 15, 2020, at 1:35 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the area of Selkirk Avenue and Charles Street for a report of a stabbing (incident C20-137661).

Upon arrival, officers located a severely injured 40-year-old male. He was transported to hospital in unstable condition. It is believed the male was stabbed after being swarmed by a group of individuals. The investigation is ongoing.

At 5:02 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a residence in the 500 block of Ellice Avenue for a report of a stabbing (incident C20-137733).

Upon arrival, officers located an injured 47-year-old female. She was transported to hospital in unstable condition. It believed the incident occurred during a dispute with another female. A female suspect is in custody and the investigation is ongoing.


Aggravated Assault – Arrest: C20-122185

As previously released:

On May 30, 2020, at 11:30 a.m., Winnipeg Police responded to a report of a male who had been assaulted in the 500 block of Selkirk Avenue. Responding officers located a 15-year-old male on the sidewalk suffering from serious head trauma. He was conveyed to hospital in critical condition where he remains with what are expected to be life-altering injuries.

Investigators believe the attack was unprovoked and that one male suspect is responsible.

Update:

Members of the Major Crimes Unit continued with the investigation. It is believed that the suspect and victim were previously unknown to each other and had been waiting at a restaurant when they became engaged in a conversation. The suspect then showed the victim a firearm which he had concealed in his backpack. The victim received his food and began to walk away, at which time the suspect struck him with a hammer causing catastrophic injuries. Investigators have not identified a motive.

On June 14, 2020, at approximately 1:04 p.m., the suspect was placed under arrest in the area of Austin Street North and Pritchard Avenue. He was found to be in possession of a knife and hatchet.

Jerry Robert Kipling, a 30-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:

- Aggravated Assault
- Assault with a Weapon
- Possession of a Weapon (x3)
- Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition
- Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
- Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
- Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order
- Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order (x7)


Aggravated Assault – Arrest: C20-133853

On June 11, 2020, at approximately 8:30 a.m., General Patrol officers responded to the 400 block of Flora for a report of a male that had been shot.

Upon arrival, officers located a male suffering from a severe gunshot wound. The victim was transported to hospital unstable and has since been upgraded to stable condition.

A suspect was located at a residence in the 700 block of Stella Avenue and was taken into custody.

Members of the Major Crimes Unit continued with the investigation.

It is believed that a party had occurred at the residence overnight, at which time the suspect became upset and fired several shots into the ceiling from a gun. Partygoers hid the firearm, which further enraged the suspect, and he threatened to kill a female. The male retrieved the gun and fled. Police were not contacted at this time.

Hours later, the male returned to the residence and shot a 19-year-old male before fleeing.

The victim remains hospitalized at this time.

Paul Lee Campbell, a 22 year-old-male of Winnipeg, has been charged with;

- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm and Ammunition
- Careless use of a Firearm
- Discharge a Firearm with Intent
- Fail to Comply with Probation (x2)


Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision – Arrest: C19-213196

As previously released:

On September 10, 2019, at approximately 4:00 p.m., emergency personnel responded to a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian in the 700 block of William Avenue.

A 37-year-old female pedestrian was transported to hospital in critical condition where she succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene.

Update:

Members of the Traffic Division continued with the investigation. It was determined that the pedestrian had been crossing at a pedestrian corridor with cautionary lights active when she was struck by a westbound vehicle.

On June 12, 2020, investigators arrested a 57-year-old male of Winnipeg. He faces charges of:

- Drive Carelessly - Cause Death (Highway Traffic Act)
- Disobey Traffic Control Device - Cause Death (Highway Traffic Act)


Home Invasion – Arrests: C20-135710

On June 12, 2020, at 11:48 p.m., General Patrol members, along with AIR1 and the K9 Unit, responded to a residence in the first 100 block of Celina Cove for a report of a break-in.

AIR1 subsequently located three suspects as they ran through yards and attempted to hide. They were taken into custody soon after.

Members of the Major Crimes Unit continued with the investigation. The residence was identified as having a legal licence to grow marijuana. It is believed that the suspects forced their way into the house and assaulted two residents; a 17-year-old male and a 20-year-old female. The suspects then bound the victims with tape and subsequently stole numerous items, including a large quantity of marijuana.

Jason Dean Bercier, a 41-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:

- Break Enter & Commit Robbery - Dwelling House
- Forcible Confinement
- Uttering Threats - Cause Death or Bodily Harm
- Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order

A 47-year-old male of Winnipeg faces charges of:

- Break Enter & Commit Robbery - Dwelling House

A 28-year-old female of Fort Alexander faces charges of:

- Break Enter & Commit Robbery - Dwelling House


Shooting – Investigation: C20-136737

On June 14, 2020, at 12:25 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the 1000 block of Redwood Avenue after several shots were fired a residence.

Upon arrival, officers located two injured adults that had been struck by gunfire; a 39-year-old male and a 40-year-old female. Both were transported to hospital in stable condition.

The investigation into the incident is continuing by detectives from the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call either 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
