March 25, 2021 Media Release

Homicide – Arrest: C18-117917

Members of the Homicide Unit have made an arrest in the homicide of Eduardo Balaquit, who was last seen on June 4, 2018. Eduardo was 59 at the time of his disappearance.

The Winnipeg Police Service began an investigation into his disappearance on June 5, 2018. Eduardo was known to have been working (one of several jobs) the evening before at a business located in the 300 block of Keewatin Street.

It was quickly concluded that Eduardo was the victim of a crime, and the investigation into his disappearance was assigned to the Homicide Unit. Police had located his van the next day with the passenger window smashed and personal belongings still inside. Both his family and the Winnipeg Police Service made frequent pleas to the public for information relating to his disappearance and identified Eduardo as a victim of crime.

Early on, the search for Eduardo had expanded beyond the city limits and specifically into the area around Arborg, Manitoba.

Significant police resources have been deployed during the almost three years since his disappearance. On March 23, 2021, detectives from the WPS Homicide Unit, with assistance of the Saskatoon Major Crimes Unit, arrested and charged a suspect in the death of Eduardo Balaquit.

Kyle Alexander James Pietz, a 35-year-old male, was arrested in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on the strength of a warrant of arrest for Manslaughter. He has been detained in custody.

The Winnipeg Police Service would like to thank the community, the RCMP, and the Saskatoon Police Service for their assistance in this investigation.

Sadly, investigators have been unable to locate Eduardo’s remains. His family deserves closure. Detectives believe someone could provide insight into his whereabouts and are asking they contact the Homicide Unit to give the family peace.

Anyone with information that can assist in this investigation is asked to contact the Winnipeg Police Service Homicide Unit at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
