Homicide Update – Arrest: C20-242271

The Homicide Unit had previously asked the public for their help to locate a pair of suspects wanted for the death of Mohamed Mohiadin AHMED, a 29-year-old male of Winnipeg, which occurred on October 12, 2020.

On February 27, 2021, Jesse James DAHER, 28, of Winnipeg, was arrested for the murder of AHMED. He was charged with Second-Degree Murder and was detained in custody. 


On April 27, 2021, at approximately 9:00 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service Homicide Unit charged a second person for the murder of AHMED.

Evan Daniel Bill BRIGHTNOSE-BAKER, 21, of Winnipeg, was arrested at a residence in the William Whyte neighbourhood on the strength of an outstanding warrant for Second-Degree Murder and three additional warrants. He was detained in custody. 

On October 12, 2020, at approximately 8:00 a.m., a passerby had been walking their dog in the area of Churchill Drive and Hay Street when they noticed what appeared to be a deceased person in the Red River. Emergency personnel responded and recovered the body, which was later identified as Ahmed.
Members of the Homicide Unit began an investigation, and it was determined that Ahmed had been murdered at a residence in the Fort Garry area just days earlier.

Weapons – Arrests: C21-93546

On April 27, 2021, at approximately 6:10 p.m., Winnipeg Police North District General Patrol units, along with members of the Tactical Support Team and K9, responded to a report of a Break & Enter in progress at a house under construction in the 700 block of Dufferin Avenue.
Responding officers determined that a number of suspects had left the house in question and had gone into a residence a few doors down. A vehicle observed at the scene of the break-in was determined to be stolen.
Officers arrested two males inside the residence and located a number of weapons during the arrest, seizing the following:
- Sawed-off and modified 12-gauge shotgun
- SKS style rifle with bayonet knife mounted to the barrel
- Ammunition
- 45cm machete

Stevie Ray BALLANTYNE, 29,  has been charged with 22 criminal offences, including Break & Enter – Dwelling House and Firearms-related charges. He was detained in custody.

 A 24-year-old male will be charged with Break & Enter – Dwelling House. He was released on a Promise to Appear.
