Robbery with Firearm – Arrest: C21-129472 / 138790

On June 6, 2021, at approximately 7:50 a.m., General Patrol officers, with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team and the K-9 Unit, responded to a commercial robbery that had just occurred at a convenience store in the 500 block of Selkirk Avenue.

Two males had entered the store, one of whom was armed with a sawed-off shotgun. They demanded cash, cigarettes and lottery tickets while pointing the firearm at the store employee. The armed suspect then fired a round, narrowly missing the employee, and they subsequently fled on foot.

The Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation; one of the suspects was identified, and a warrant was issued.

On June 16, 2021, at approximately 11:15 a.m., North District officers patrolling in the area of Flora Avenue and McKenzie Street observed the wanted suspect from the previous commercial robbery. He attempted to flee but was quickly taken into custody on the strength of the outstanding warrant. During the arrest, the suspect was non-compliant, resisted, and the two officers were assaulted. A search of the suspect resulted in the seizure of a number of items, including the following:

- 7 grams of methamphetamine (estimated street value of $240)
- 4 Percocet pills (estimated street value of $40)
- $875 Canadian cash
- drug packaging materials

During the incident, the suspect and both officers sustained injuries. All three were treated at a hospital and released soon after.

Cory James SPILCHUK, 37, of Winnipeg, was charged with the following offences:

- Warrant for: Robbery and Firearms-related charges x7, Fail to Comply with Condition of    Release Order x 3
- Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking x 2 (Methamphetamine, Percocets)
- Possess Proceeds of Property Under $5,000
- Assault with Intent to Resist Arrest x 2

SPILCHUK was detained in custody.
