Firearm – Arrests: C21-184795

On August 8, 2021, at approximately 7:45 p.m., officers working in General Patrol and the Traffic Unit, stopped a stolen vehicle that entered a parking lot in the 1000 block of Empress Street.

The male driver was taken into custody while the remaining two male occupants fled on foot; they were quickly apprehended by assisting police units. False identities were provided during the arrest.

A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a loaded Ruger handgun with a tampered serial number.

Hashim Abdulkadir MOHAMED, 26, of Edmonton, Alberta, was charged with:

- Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon Knowing its Unauthorized
- Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
- Tampering with Serial Number of a Firearm
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in Motor Vehicle
- Obstruct Peace Officer
- Fail to Comply Condition of Release Order x 5
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
- Identity Fraud
- Possession of an Identity Document

Samatar MOHIADIN, 23, of Toronto, Ontario, was charged with:

- Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon Knowing its Unauthorized
- Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
- Tampering with Serial Number of a Firearm
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in Motor Vehicle
- Fail to Comply Condition of Release Order x 4
- Public Mischief

Mohamod Rashen MOHAMOD, 21, was charged with:

-Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm

- Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
- Tampering with Serial Number of a Firearm
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in Motor Vehicle

All three accused were detained in custody.

 

Homicide – Arrest: C21-176898

On August 6, 2021, Eric Jade WIRFFEL was arrested.

Previously Released:

On August 3, 2021, the Winnipeg Police Service issued a media release on the murder of Tanner Daniel KERR, 31, which occurred on July 30, 2021, at a residence in the 400 block of Arlington Street.

Investigators from the Homicide Unit are now asking for the public’s assistance in locating a male wanted in connection with this homicide.

A warrant of arrest for Manslaughter has been issued for Eric Jade WIRFFEL, 36, of Winnipeg.

Homicide – Investigation: C21-183791

On August 7, 2021, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Central District officers responded to the 100 block of Henry Street for the report of a male who had been stabbed.

Police located a 60-year-old male with severe injuries and provided emergency first-aid. He was transported to hospital in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The deceased has been identified as Owen Laverne PRUDEN of Winnipeg.

Shooting & Weapons – Arrest: C21-169790

On July 22, 2021, Winnipeg Police responded to a male shot at a residence in the 200 block of Austin Street. The victim was taken to the hospital and listed in stable condition. Officers from the Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation.

On August 6, 2021, two suspects, both carrying firearms, went to a residence in the 1000 block of Burrows Avenue. During the confrontation, an adult male in the home was shot in the leg. He was taken to the hospital and listed in stable condition.

On August 8, officers from the Major Crimes Unit were attempting to arrest a suspect linked to these two incidents when he was located in the Dufferin neighbourhood. The suspect was taken into custody after a short foot chase. He was found to be in possession of a loaded, sawed-off rifle with an altered serial number.

Craig Dwight TAYPOTAT, 22, has been charged with Armed Robbery, Aggravated Assault, twenty-one firearms and weapons offences, and six counts of Failing to Comply with Court Orders.

He was detained in custody.

Public Advisory

On August 8, 2021, the Sex Crimes Unit responded to the report of a female teenager who had been seriously sexually assaulted.

At approximately 3:45 a.m., the victim was walking along the river trail behind Churchill High School when she was grabbed by an unknown male and sexually assaulted. She managed to free herself and ran for help.

Later this same day, at approximately 6:00 p.m., a female in her twenties was jogging along the river trail near Harkness Avenue when an unknown male came up from the riverbank and attacked her. He grabbed hold of her from behind and pulled her to the ground. The victim screamed and was able to escape.

On June 12, the Winnipeg Police Service had issued a public advisory regarding another assault against a female victim at Cockburn Street and Churchill Drive.

Detectives are investigating several incidents between April and August 2021, involving females being physically accosted at various points along the Red River Trail system. The victims were grabbed from behind, pulled to the ground, and threatened with a weapon.

The victims were all female, aged between fifteen to late thirties.

The incidents varied from the early evening hours when it was still light out into the early morning hours when it was dark outside. All the incidents occurred along the west Red River trail from the Osborne Bridge, south along Churchill Drive, to the Elm Park footbridge at Jubilee Avenue.

While investigators are unable to definitively link all the incidents, the Winnipeg Police Service cautions the public to:

- walk/run along the trails with a partner when possible
- tell someone the route you are taking
- avoid poorly lit paths or running/walking when it is dark
- stick to populated paths when running/walking/cycling
- carry a cellphone and/or personal alarm device
- run without headphones
- if you are confronted, be loud and shout for help
