Sexual Assaults – Update/Public Assistance Requested

Update:

The Winnipeg Police Service Sex Crimes Unit continues to investigate a number of sexual assaults that occurred between April and August 2021 on or around the Red River Trail System. This is the geographic area consisting of the west Red River trail from the Osborne Bridge, south along Churchill Drive, to the Elm Park footbridge at Jubilee Avenue.

The sexual assaults happened between the early evening and the early morning.

The victims have all been female and range in ages between 15 to late-30’s. In brief, these incidents involved the victims being grabbed from behind, pulled to the ground and threatened with a weapon.

On June 12 and August 9, the Winnipeg Police Service issued media advisories regarding the sexual assaults. There has been an increased police presence in the area as detectives continue to investigate extensively. No new incidents of this nature have been reported since August 8.

Winnipeg Police have received numerous tips to assist in the investigation. We wish to thank those who shared the advisories and provided information.

Sex Crimes Unit investigators have obtained and are sharing surveillance video that shows a male person of interest. The male is described as wearing all black – including a black face mask around his chin.

This investigation is continuing by members of the Sex Crimes Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call the Sex Crimes Unit at 204-986-6245 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Stabbing – Investigation: C21-197058

On August 23, 2021, at 8:45 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to an apartment building in the 100 block of Hendon Avenue for a report of a male that had been stabbed.

Upon arrival, officers located two injured males – both with stabbing-related wounds. One male was transported to hospital in critical condition and has since been upgraded to stable condition. The other was transported to hospital in stable condition.

Members of the Major Crimes Unit are continuing with the investigation.

Homicide - Arrest: C21-190682

Update:

On August 23, 2021, at approximately 10 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service located Buboire at a residence in the Norwood East area and safely took her into custody.

We thank the public and the media for their assistance.

Buboire has been detained.

As previously released:

On August 16, 2021, at approximately 2:00 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the report of a female who had been shot in the 500 block of Young Street.

Officers located a 45-year-old female outside suffering from a severe gunshot wound and administered emergency first-aid. The victim was subsequently transported to hospital in critical condition, where she succumbed to her injuries.

The deceased was identified as Deena Anne Markwick, a 45-year-old female of Winnipeg.

Members of the Homicide Unit are asking the public and the media for their assistance with locating Laura Fay Buboire, a 30-year-old female of Winnipeg, who is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for the following offences:

- Second Degree Murder
- Armed Robbery using a Firearm
- Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order
- Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized

Buboire is described as Indigenous, approximately 5’4” in height and 134 lbs in weight with a medium build. She has green-coloured eyes and may have red or brown-coloured hair.

The public is cautioned not to approach Buboire. Anyone with knowledge regarding her whereabouts is asked to call 911. Additional information can be relayed to the Homicide Unit at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
