Robbery – Public Advisory: C21-213824

Update:

On September 13, 2021, the Winnipeg Police Service released an image to elicit the public’s assistance in identifying a male. The male was a person of interest regarding a serious assault to a passenger on a transit bus.

Yesterday at approximately 7:30 p.m., an off-duty officer observed a male in the 1800 block of Portage Avenue and recognized the male from the images the police had distributed. The officer called for backup, and this male was subsequently taken into custody. Members of the Major Crimes Unit continued the investigation.

It is believed on September 12, 2021, at approximately 3:15 p.m., the suspect was already seated on a bus travelling eastbound on Portage Avenue when an elderly female boarded the bus and sat down near him. After the bus travelled a short distance, the 70-year-old victim was stabbed. The driver was alerted to the incident, stopping the bus at Portage/Fort, at which time the suspect exited and fled on foot. Police were contacted.

Officers located a seriously injured female on the bus who was transported to hospital in critical condition and later upgraded to stable condition.

A 43-year-old male of Winnipeg has been arrested and remains in police custody at this time.
