Aggravated Assault – Arrest: C21-207033


On November 18, 2021, the Major Crimes Unit arrested Cordell Lionel THOMAS on the strength of an outstanding warrant for: Aggravated Assault, Possess Weapon and Fail to Comply with Release Order x 2. He was detained in custody.

As previously released:

The Winnipeg Police Service had previously released details on a serious assault that occurred during the early morning of September 7, 2021, near Burrows Avenue and Charles Street.

The Major Crimes Unit continued the investigation and determined that the victim, a male in his seventies, was walking his dog when he was confronted by an unknown female who began yelling and swearing at him. Without provocation, the victim was then attacked with a knife by two additional males who came from across the street. The assault continued while the victim lay on the ground. The suspects fled on foot while the victim managed to make his way home and contact the police. He was transported to hospital in unstable condition and sustained life-altering injuries.

On November 14, 2021, a female suspect was located and taken into custody. Jade Noelle BROWN, 20, of Winnipeg, was charged with Aggravated Assault and detained in custody.

A second suspect has been identified as Cordell Lionel THOMAS, 20 years of age. A Warrant for his arrest has been issued.

Homicide – Arrest: C21-269682


The Winnipeg Police Service previously released information about a suspicious death on November 18, 2021, in the area of River Avenue and Osborne Street. The Homicide Unit took over the investigation and determined this death to be a homicide. The deceased has been identified as Oghenetega UFUOMA, 41 of Winnipeg.

The Homicide Unit arrested and charged an adult male, Nevis CARTER, 38, of Winnipeg, with Manslaughter, and he was detained in custody.

Investigators believe that the victim and the accused were known to frequent this area. The victim was attacked during an altercation inside a bus shelter located on the northeast side of River/Osborne. It has been determined that during this assault, other people were occupying the bus shelter and may have valuable information to assist investigators. This area was heavily populated by pedestrians and required an expansive area to be held and processed by the Forensic Services Unit, which assisted in the investigation.

Suspicious Death – Investigation: C21-269682
On November 18, 2021, at approximately 7:15 a.m., Emergency Services Personnel responded to a report of an unresponsive adult male on the ground in the 400 block of River Avenue. First responders determined the male was deceased.

The initial assessment has determined that the death is suspicious in nature and the Homicide Unit will be taking over the investigation.

Weapons/Drugs – Arrests: C21-272124

On November 20, 2021, officers from the North District Community Support Unit (CSU), received information that drugs and firearms were being trafficked from a single-family residence in the William Whyte neighbourhood.

On November 21, at approximately 12:15 a.m., CSU members conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle leaving the house. Three adults from the vehicle were arrested.

Officers located:
- 32 grams of methamphetamine
- Sawed-off Mossberg .22 calibre rifle with a loaded magazine
- Sawed-off loaded 12 gauge shotgun with tampered serial number
- Sawed-off .22 cal. rifle with altered serial number and a loaded magazine
- Numerous rounds of ammunition

Michael John DESMARAIS, 30, faces 25 charges related to firearms and drug offences.

Stephanny Nathaly LOPEZ, 34, faces 12 charges related to firearms and drug offences.

Both were detained in custody.

A year 25-year-old female faces 13 charges related to firearms and drug offences and was released by way of an Undertaking.
