Assault – Investigation: C22-11109

As previously released:

On January 16, 2022, at 12:36 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to The Forks for a report of an assault.

Upon arrival, officers located an injured adult male who was transported to a hospital in stable condition.

The investigation has led officers to a residential building in the 300 block of Assiniboine Avenue, where two suspects have been taken into custody.

Members of the Major Crimes Unit are continuing with the investigation. No further information is available at this time.

Update:

The Major Crimes Unit identified two suspects in this incident. It was determined that the victim in his thirties was at the Forks with his family when he left to use the public washroom. After exiting the washroom, two unknown males confronted him, and an unprovoked assault with a knife occurred. The two fled on foot, and police were contacted as many witnesses were in this public area.

Investigators subsequently located the two suspects in the 300 block of Assiniboine Avenue.

A 20-year-old male of Winnipeg has been charged with seven assault-related charges and was detained in custody.

A 21-year-old male of Winnipeg is facing three assault-related charges. He was released on an Undertaking (as mandated by the Criminal Code).

Aggravated Assault – Investigation: C22-11519

On January 17, 2022, at approximately 3:30 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the report of a stabbing at an apartment complex in the 600 block of Maryland Street.

Police located two adult males inside the complex, seriously injured and losing blood. Officers performed emergency medical care until paramedics arrived, and both victims in their twenties were transported to hospital in critical condition. They were later upgraded to stable condition.

A scene was located in one of the suites, and the investigation was turned over to the Major Crimes Unit.

Weapons – Arrest: C22-11487

On January 17, 2022, at approximately 12:40 a.m., a West District General Patrol unit located a stolen vehicle travelling in the area of Keewatin Street and Logan Avenue. Additional WPS units became involved, and a tire deflation device was successfully  deployed at Route 90 and Inkster Boulevard. The stolen vehicle stopped in a ditch a short time later.

Officers observed firearms and ammunition and a grenade within the truck. Members of the Bomb Unit were called to assist, however, the grenade was subsequently determined to be inert. Three occupants were taken into custody at the scene.

Seized:
- Sawed-off shotgun (loaded with 5 rounds)
- Semi-automatic rifle (loaded with ten rounds)
- a concealment-style handgun holster
- a loaded handgun magazine
- various rounds of assorted ammunition
- white powdered substance (believed to be cocaine. ESV $20,000)

The 31-year-old male driver faces ten firearms-related charges, as well as:
- Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer
- Assault Peace Officer x 2
- Possess Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking (Cocaine)
- Possess Property Obtained by Crime over $5,000.

A 22-year-old male passenger faces nine firearms-related offences.
