On January 26, 2022, at approximately 8:30 a.m., members of the Foot Patrol Unit were made aware of an assault that occurred in the Skywalk.
Officers located the victim, an adult female in her fifties. She indicated that while walking through the Skywalk near the Hargrave entrance, an unknown male asked her for money. When she refused to give him money, she was pushed against the wall, assaulted with a handheld tool and verbally threatened. The weapon, fortunately, did not penetrate her clothing, and the suspect fled on foot.
Foot Patrol members collaborated with Skywalk security, and the suspect was identified. Subsequently, a warrant for his arrest was issued.
On January 27, 2022, at approximately 9:00 a.m., police were contacted by Skywalk security, as the suspect was observed within the underground shops area of Main Street.
Jaime Efrain GARCIA, a 40-year-old male of Winnipeg, was arrested and charged for Robbery and Uttering Threats to Kill or Cause Bodily Harm.
He was detained in custody.
On January 27, 2022, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) released preliminary information regarding an early morning fire at a residence in the 300 block of Simcoe Street. There were several occupants at the time of the fire; five were children ranging in age from under one year to early teens.
WFPS initiated an offensive attack and declared the fire under control at 6:23 a.m.
Nine occupants of the residence were transported to hospital (four adults in unstable condition, four children in stable condition and one child in critical condition).
As of yesterday afternoon, the five-year-old child in critical condition, unfortunately, succumbed to their injuries. All other people transported to hospital have been upgraded to stable condition.
The Winnipeg Police Service, in collaboration with WFPS, continues to investigate this fire. At this stage of the investigation, the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature.
