Virtual police response
If you have reported a crime, you may be contacted by an officer in our Virtual Police Response Unit.
Recognizing your desire for a speedy response, desire for privacy and the notion that not all crimes require an on-site visit, Virtual Police Response enables you to engage with an officer through video using a smartphone or tablet.
A time can be prescheduled and the officer can obtain your report and view the crime scene.
Here’s how it works:
- Officers review the reports of crimes we receive.
- If the incident meets the guidelines, an officer will follow up with a phone call asking for your permission to participate in a virtual assessment.
- Once you accept, you will virtually connect using the video camera on your smart device.
- The officer will take your report, view the crime scene, and determine if additional investigative or forensic resources are required to be dispatched.
There is no obligation to consent to a virtual police response. No additional data is collected beyond what we already collect for law enforcement purposes.
The online interaction is not recorded or retained by the Winnipeg Police Service; it is used for assessment purposes only.
