Changes to all Commercial Inspections

In an effort to provide efficient and consistent service, commercial inspections offers an online form for applicants to request an inspection appointment. Applicants can submit the online form and information will be forwarded to a scheduler, who will then review the inspection request and coordinate an appointment time. Please note that while the applicant selects an inspection time frame, this time cannot be guaranteed. This new process will be conducted for all inspection disciplines. We encourage use of the online form. However applicants can also call 204-986-5190 for inspection requests.

Please go to www.winnipeg.ca/commercialinspectionrequest/ and submit the Commercial Inspections Online Form. You will need to provide:

  • Applicant name, email and phone number
  • Permit number (look up tool provided)
  • Property address
  • Suite/Unit Number/Floor(if applicable)
  • Type of Inspection Required
  • Contact Name and Phone Number
  • Please note there is a section in the form for comments or additional information.  If there are any requirements to enter the space where the inspection has been requested please provide them in this section.

The inspection stages indicated on the online form are both for progress and final inspections.  Please note that progress inspections are mandatory prior to requesting occupancy.

For electrical inspections where the site is occupied without power please do not use the online form.  Instead, please call our intake centre at 204-986-5190 between 8:30am and 4:30 pm and indicate the condition.  Outside of business hours please call 311.

Further changes to our inspections system are in progress and we will update the website as they are implemented. Please continue to check your permit document for updated contact information.

You may discuss questions with the Inspections Branch when you are contacted regarding the items noted above

As per Section 5 of The Winnipeg Building By-law, it is the responsibility of the owner of a building to ensure that every part of the building is in compliance with the Codes that were in effect at the time of construction, alteration, or renovation. This requirement applies whether or not the owner owned the building at the time that the building or part of the building was constructed, altered, or renovated.

We are committed to ensuring that construction in Winnipeg is compliant with all applicable City of Winnipeg by-laws, codes, and standards.

Inspection Audit

The City of Winnipeg conducted an audit of permits processed under the Commercial Inspection Interim Strategy of 2019 to review for compliance of building, plumbing/mechanical, and electrical codes, standards and by-laws. Those applicants that were selected for an audit on the interim strategy have been notified.

Those that were not selected for audit will receive a permit closure notification via email once this process has taken place.
