Large items (bulky waste)

Large items are any eligible solid waste items that:

  • do not fit wholly inside a garbage cart (240L or 360L) that we have issued for collection;
  • have a maximum size of 1.5x1.5x2.15 metres (5x5x7 feet);
  • weigh less than 34 kg (75 lbs), except for large appliances
Common items we do accept
  • large appliances;
  • furniture;
  • mattresses (all sizes);
Common items we don't accept
  • Leaf and yard waste;
  • Boxes full of garbage;
  • Christmas trees;
  • Auto parts;
  • Construction/renovation materials (e.g., furnaces, bathtubs, sinks, doors, windows, fencing, flooring, carpet, lumber, shingles, sand, mud, drywall);
  • Hazardous waste products (e.g., antifreeze, car batteries, propane tanks, oil based paints);
  • Used oil, filters, and containers (e.g., engine oil, diesel filters, oil and antifreeze containers);
  • Electronic waste (e.g., televisions, computers and equipment, laptops, printers, scanners, microwaves, cell phones); and
  • Any other material we determine is too large to collect or poses a safety hazard to our staff or collectors.

Scheduling a pickup

If you have large items to get rid of, contact 311 and request a special pickup before you put them in your lane. If you do not call 311, your items will not be picked up.

Place the items at least an arm's length from your carts, as close as possible to 7:00 am on your pickup day.

Many large items are collected on your regular recycling and garbage collection day. Large appliances and appliances with ozone-depleting substances may be collected on a different day. Contact 311 to find out your collection day.

Fees

Large items

We will collect up to ten large items per collection for a fee per item. Examples of large items are:

  • furniture, mattresses
  • appliances without ozone-depleting substances (e.g., stoves, dishwashers, washing machines)
Appliances with ozone-depleting substances

We will collect up to ten appliances with ozone-depleting substances per collection for a fee per item. The service includes professional removal of hazardous materials such as chlorofluorocarbons. Examples of appliances with ozone-depleting substances are:

  • refrigerators, freezers
  • air conditioners
