Water conservation

Slow the Flow – Water education program

Statistics show that Winnipeg teenagers use more water at home each day than any other age group:

Slowing the flow starts in the classroom

Educating pre-teens about their water use habits shows them that they can have a positive impact in conserving this precious resource for the future. So we've implemented a Slow the Flow water education program.

This classroom-ready program teaches middle-years students how to reduce residential water consumption before their water-wasting teenage years.

The goals of the Slow the Flow water education program are:

  1. To develop a general awareness of water conservation.
  2. To create life-long water conservationists – the decision makers of the future.
  3. To enhance existing core subjects with relevant lifestyle information.

Shortly after the Slow the Flow water education program was developed, an environmental education partnership was formed with FortWhyte Alive. They administer the Slow the Flow water education program, providing Winnipeg teachers with resources and support for Slow the Flow in their classrooms. Field trips can be arranged to FortWhyte Alive to explore water through their Blue Planet program.
