Winnipeg, MB - Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz announced today that eight City-owned community centres will receive funding for renovations, including $50,000 to Garden City Community Centre to complete the Seven Oaks Arena Project.
The Community Centre Renovation Grant Program (CCRG) approved eight applications from the Spring 2014 intake period for a combined total of $375,834 grant funding. In addition, Garden City Community Centre will receive $50,000 from the grant fund as approved by City Council on March 26, 2014.
“Community centres are a neighbourhood meeting place - families, children, youth, and adults use community centres and their programming daily,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “We want community centres to be able to focus on the programming, and not on how they are going to repair or upgrade the amenities. We’re proud to support them and their commitment to the community by funding their renovations through the grant program.”
The community centres receiving grants are:
Chalmers | Oxford Heights |
Heritage Victoria | Robert A. Steen |
Melrose Park | St. Norbert |
Norquay | Tuxedo |
Garden City |
Some of the approved projects include renovations such as security system and lighting upgrades, as well as flooring and gym upgrades.
The CCRG program, created by Mayor Sam Katz in 2010, and was approved by Council in 2012, ensures City-owned, board-run community centres can access much needed assistance required to complete facility repairs and allow them the ability to set and choose their programming priorities.
The program provides up to $965,000 in annual funding for community centres to access in support of repairs, upgrades, retrofits, safety improvements and renovation projects. Applicants are eligible for 100% support of project costs to a maximum of $50,000 per project per calendar year.
The program has two intake periods each year: Spring Intake in March and Fall Intake in October. Spring 2014 is the fifth application period for the program.
