In mid-January 2022, the Winnipeg Police Service was alerted by the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) to suspicious packages being sent to a resident in Winnipeg.
On February 16, 2022, following an investigation regarding the importation and manufacturing of Conducted Energy Weapons into the province, the Canadian Border Services Agency and the Winnipeg Police Service were granted search warrants for a single-family residence in the Transcona neighbourhood of Winnipeg.
On February 22, 2022, with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team, officers of the Winnipeg Police Service Firearms Investigations and Enforcement Unit (FIEU) executed the search warrant. As a result, two adult residents were taken into custody, and the following items were seized:
- .22 calibre rifle with ammunition
- .22 calibre shotgun with ammunition
- Homemade Conducted Energy Weapons including a cattle prod
- Materials used in the manufacturing of Conducted Energy Weapons
- Quantities of Oxycontin and Xanax
- Body Armour
- 3D Printer
A 43-year-old male of Winnipeg a 40-year-old female of Winnipeg are facing the following Firearms and Trafficking related charges:
- Possession of a Weapon
- Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon
- Store Firearm or Restricted Weapon Contrary to Regulations
- Unauthorized Importing of a Firearm, Prohibited or Restricted Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition
- Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the purpose of trafficking
- Weapons Trafficking
As mandated by the Criminal Code of Manitoba, both arrested parties were released on Undertakings.
