On March 9, 2022, at approximately 2:00 p.m., General Patrol members responded to a mall in the 1400 block of Portage Avenue for a report of two males verbally threatening security and patrons. The two had then approached a vehicle and robbed the occupants at gunpoint with a pair of firearms that were produced.

Mall security contacted 911 and directed responding officers to the two suspects. Both attempted to flee but were engaged by police in a foot pursuit.

While being pursued, one male was observed to discard a loaded gun (which was later recovered). The male was taken into custody in the 1500 block of St. Matthews Avenue. The firearm was found to be a loaded 9mm handgun with a 30-round magazine and a tampered serial number. The other male was taken into custody near St. Matthews Avenue and Milt Stegall Drive, where he was found to possess a loaded 9mm handgun.

Members of the Major Crimes Unit continued with the investigation.

It is believed that the two suspects, who were not known to any of their victims, had attended the mall and began displaying unusual behaviour that concerned store staff. Security was contacted, and the two were asked to leave, at which time they made threats to the guards. The two then approached a vehicle parked outside the mall and produced firearms, demanding property from the three occupants. They received an undisclosed amount of cash and fled.
