On February 19, 2025, the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the report of a male armed with a firearm which was discharged in the 600 block of Manitoba Avenue.
Attending North District General Patrol officers, with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team (TST) attended and learned two youth male suspects, in the company of several yet to be identified suspects, attended to a residence at the above location. One of the suspects discharged a firearm toward the residence, and unknown individuals within the residence returned gunfire.
At approximately 4:27 p.m., officers located a victim, (who is one of the youth suspects), in the 600 block of Pritchard Avenue, suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower body. He was transported to hospital in unstable condition, and later upgraded to stable.
At approximately 4:28 p.m., officers located and arrested the other youth suspect near Flora Avenue and McKenzie Street without incident, and a firearm was located nearby by police.
A 14-year-old male youth of Winnipeg has been charged with the following:
- Discharge a Firearm Into or At a Place in a Reckless Manner
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000
He was detained in custody.
On February 26, the Winnipeg Police Service’s Guns and Gangs Unit initiated an investigation in response to the on-going drug trafficking and gang activity in the William Whyte neighbourhood, which included the 600 block of Manitoba Avenue.
On February 27, at approximately 5:54 p.m., investigators with the Guns and Gangs Unit, with the assistance of TST, executed a search warrant in the 600 block of Manitoba Avenue in response to continuing activity at that location. As a result of this search warrant one individual was taken into police custody and the following items were seized:
- Ruger shotgun
- .22 ammunition (approximately 25 rounds)
- Shotgun shells (approximately 5 rounds)
- Drug paraphernalia
A 61-year-old male of Winnipeg is facing the following charges:
- Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
- Careless Storage of Firearm, Ammunition, Prohibited Weapon or Device
- Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
- Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon, Firearm Part or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order
He was released on an Undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code.
