Scam Alert: Travelling Scammers Targeting Kindness

Released: July 16, 2025 at 1:22 p.m.

Winnipeg Police Service is sharing a public safety reminder after receiving multiple reports of fraud and theft - believed to involve a travelling criminal group currently operating in our city.

These scams often happen in public places like gas stations, banks, mall parking lots, and grocery stores, and usually during the daytime. Suspects approach individuals under the guise of needing help, sometimes offering “gold” jewelry or an “iPhone” in return... items that turn out to be fake and worthless.

In some cases, suspects use distraction to remove real jewelry without the victim noticing until it’s too late.

Here’s what to watch for:

  • Unfamiliar individuals asking for directions or money
  • Offers of "valuable" items in exchange for help
  • People travelling in groups with out-of-province license plates
  • Some reports indicate the suspects are travelling with children

We urge residents to stay cautious. If approached, avoid engagement and don’t accept money or items. Please report suspicious behavior or incidents to the Property Crimes Unit at 204-986-2426 or anonymously via Crime Stoppers: 204-786-TIPS or winnipegcrimestoppers.org
