We want to help make roads safer for everyone: pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and transit riders.
The Winnipeg Road Safety Strategic Action Plan is the roadmap to get us there. The plan sets a short-term goal of reducing fatal and serious injury collisions by 20 percent over the next five years.
It outlines five areas for us to focus on:
- Pedestrians
- Cyclists
- Intersections
- Speed
- Road safety education and outreach
It also sets out steps to take, and where to spend money to achieve our goal.
Safety projects
The Winnipeg Road Safety Strategic Action Plan identifies 67 actions to improve safety for all road users. Here are some of our current road safety projects.
Traffic calming quick-builds
Quick-build methods are an alternative to calm traffic quickly.
Traffic calming projects
Traffic calming helps slow or reduce traffic through residential areas.
Leading Pedestrian Intervals
LPIs make intersections safer by giving pedestrians a five-second head start to enter the intersection.
Pedestrian scramble
We are piloting Winnipeg’s first pedestrian scramble at King Street and Bannatyne Avenue.
Road safety lawn signs
Lawn signs help make people more aware of road safety issues and can remind drivers to slow down and stop for pedestrians.
Road Safety Dashboard
This dashboard provides an overview of crash data and road safety improvements.
It can help us understand road safety issues and what we're doing to solve them. It will also track progress toward our goal: reducing fatal and serious injury collisions by 20 percent.
The data comes from Manitoba Public Insurance and Winnipeg Police Service. We update the dashboard annually.
Road Safety Strategic Action Plan
When it comes to road safety in Winnipeg, we are working towards Vision Zero. This means we want a future where no one is seriously injured or killed on our roads.
