Take a Free Ride on Transit this New Year's Eve

Winnipeg, MB - Winnipeg Transit is pleased to once again partner with Manitoba Public Insurance to offer free Transit service on New Year’s Eve to help everyone get home safely.

“The Free Ride program is an easy and convenient way for Winnipeggers to get home on New Year’s Eve while keeping our streets safe from alcohol-related tragedies,” said Councillor Marty Morantz, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works. “With the support of Manitoba Public Insurance, Winnipeg Transit is helping citizens to make the right choice not to drink and drive.”

The Free Ride program applies to all Regular and Handi-Transit service starting at 7:00 p.m. until end of service. The last buses leave downtown at approximately 1:35 a.m. For complete bus route and schedule information, visit winnipegtransit.com or call 311.

“We encourage people to plan ahead and make the right decision,” said Ward Keith, vice-president, Business Development & Communications and chief product officer Manitoba Public Insurance. “Let’s start the New Year on a safe and happy note. The New Year’s Eve bus is a safe option to get home.”

Manitoba Public Insurance has sponsored the Free Ride New Year’s Eve service since 2011. As a road safety leader in the province, Manitoba Public Insurance is committed to reducing alcohol-related collisions, deaths and injuries.

“By all means, please go out and enjoy yourself on New Year’s Eve, but make a plan before you go out to get home safe,” said Winnipeg Police Staff Sergeant Rob Riffel. “The New Year’s Eve Free Ride program is a great alternative to ensure your night ends on a happy note.”

Last year, more than 15,000 revelers made Winnipeg Transit part of their plan to get home safely on New Year’s Eve.
