Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update 2: Gunn Road Fire

Crews knock down fire, smoke and odour may persist

Winnipeg, MB – At approximately 10:05 a.m. on Monday, October 22, 2018, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services crews responded to a fire at a commercial business in the area of Saunders Street and Gunn Road in the R.M. of Springfield involving asphalt tanks. We responded to assist at the request of the R.M. of Springfield Fire Department.

As of 4:30 p.m., the fire has been knocked down and WFPS and the Springfield Fire Department remain on scene to monitor and continue cooling the asphalt tanks. The 800 metre evacuation area is being lifted.

Provincial officials from Sustainable Development have been monitoring air quality in the area throughout the day. While residents may notice a distinct odour, no detectable concentrations of hazardous gases have been detected.

The following City of Winnipeg facilities are closed this evening:

  • Transcona Kinsmen Centennial Pool
  • Transcona Library

Localized road closures will remain in effect in areas near the location of the fire to facilitate ongoing operations until further notice.
