Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Simcoe Street Fire

Released: July 18, 2019 at 11:20 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 7:55 a.m. on July 18, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a three-storey apartment complex in the 600 block of Simcoe Street. Upon arrival on scene, crews found smoke coming from the windows of one of the suites. An offensive attack was launched and crews were able to keep the fire contained to the suite of origin. It was declared under control at 8:04 a.m.

Occupants of the building had self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. One individual was assessed on scene by paramedics but did not require transport to hospital. No other injuries were reported.

The fire is under investigation; however, preliminary observations suggest its cause may have been accidental due to unattended cooking. Residents are reminded to always stay in the kitchen while cooking. Stove burners should always be turned off when leaving the kitchen, even for a short time. Anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — should always be kept away from the stovetop.
