Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Sherbrook Street

Released: August 7, 2022 at 10:12 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 7:33 p.m. on August 7, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a garage fire in the 500 block of Sherbrook Street.

When crews arrived, they found the fire had spread from the garage to a nearby vehicle and to a vacant two-and-a-half storey, multi-family residence. Crews launched an offensive fire attack using handlines and an aerial ladder truck. They remain on-scene at this time and are expected to be there for several more hours, completing extinguishment of the fire and putting out hotspots.

A search of the garage, vehicle, and residence were completed and no occupants were found. Both neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution.

One firefighter was injured in the line of duty. They were assessed by on-scene paramedics and transported to hospital in stable condition. No other injuries have been reported.

Sherbrook Street is currently closed between Ellice Avenue and Sargent Avenue. It will re-open once crews clear the scene.

The fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available at this time but the buildings have sustained significant smoke, fire, and water damage.
