Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Ostafiew Farm Road

Released: September 30, 2023 at 9:22 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB –At 6:11 p.m. on Friday, September 29, 2023, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a single-family home on Ostafiew Farm Road.

When crews arrived on scene, they found smoke coming from the house. They launched a fire attack from inside the house and declared the fire under control at 6:30 p.m.

All occupants of the house safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services (ESS) team helped displaced residents in finding temporary accommodations.

Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by unattended cooking. Residents are reminded of the following safety tips to reduce the risk of kitchen fires:

  • Always stay in the kitchen while cooking.
  • Oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, or curtains should be kept away from the stovetop.
  • Oil should be heated slowly. If cooking oil catches fire and the fire is small and manageable, use a kitchen fire extinguisher or cover the top with a metal lid.
  • Never use water to put out an oil fire.

Damage estimates are not available at this time.
