Winnipeg, MB – Winnipeggers can now hop on a Winnipeg Transit bus directly to FortWhyte Alive’s Buffalo Crossing. The long-awaited facility, located along McGillivray Boulevard, officially opened to the public today.
“FortWhyte Alive’s mission has been to encourage actions leading to sustainable living,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “There’s no better way to support this than by providing public transportation directly to their zero-carbon Buffalo Crossing centre.”
City Council approved service to Buffalo Crossing last fall. Winnipeg Transit has lifted the detour on routes 649 Chevrier and 650 McGillvray, allowing passengers to ride to FortWhyte Alive’s new southern gateway.
“Adding transit access into Buffalo Crossing is another step in our goal of making FortWhyte Alive accessible to all Winnipeggers,” said Councillor Janice Lukes, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works. “We have made it a priority the last few years to add more sustainable and active transportation options to this green space.”
“FortWhyte Alive is an urban nature oasis that everyone should be able to experience,” said Evan Duncan, Councillor for Charleswood – Tuxedo – Westwood. “Direct transit access will give residents the opportunity to leave their vehicles at home and to travel more sustainably.”
