We're offering free Instructor Guard training to qualified applicants.

If you’ve thought about becoming a lifeguard but missed out on the free training we offered last year, you’re in luck.

The Instructor Guard Recruitment program is returning this summer, and will provide the opportunity for up to 40 successful applicants to receive the six courses required to apply as a lifeguard/swim instructor with us — all for free.

“Our first round of the Instructor Guard Recruitment Program was incredibly successful, and resulted in us hiring 58 new Instructor Guards and six Aquatic Instructors,” said Jennifer Sarna, Manager of Recreation Services.

As we continue to recover from the effects of the pandemic, these recruitment programs will help us to improve facility hours and eventually offer more swimming lessons for Winnipeggers.

Applicants must be 16 years old, have a minimum Grade 10 education, and be able to demonstrate swimming ability at a Canadian Red Cross Level 8 or Lifesaving Society Swimmer 6 level.

At the end of the 16-week program, which runs from August to January, you’ll be invited to apply to work as an Instructor Guard for us.

“Becoming an Instructor Guard with the City is a fantastic employment opportunity for all ages,” said Sarna.

Apply online now until July 16, 2023.
