Permanent signs for commercial businesses need inspections for structural, electrical and placement requirements.

Make sure to obtain a permit before starting any construction or alteration to any part of a sign. New internally illuminated signs or electrical changes to an existing sign also need a separate electrical sign (ES) permit.

City inspectors review the following types of signs and sign-related work:

  • Signs attached to a building/structure that are installed outdoors or indoors (i.e. when visible from a public right-of-way)
  • Permanent free-standing signs
  • Air supported signs
  • Structural components of signs and methods of attachment
  • Electrical connections and electrical equipment approvals
  • Placement where signs project on private/public property

This list does not include all types of sign construction/installation.

 

Operational standards for digital signs

Digital signs are required to follow operational standards set out by Winnipeg’s zoning bylaws.

Review the operational standards for digital signs regulated by the Downtown Winnipeg Zoning By-law 100/2004 (Section 220(3.1)) and Winnipeg Zoning By-law 200/2006 (Section 183).
